Pit Stops

Imagine filling up your car and changing all four tires in less than 25 seconds. That’s exactly what happens during a pit stop – and much more. With the format of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship events, a lot happens during a routine pit stop.

What To Watch For:

No one is allowed over the wall until the car comes to a full stop. A tire mechanic connects an air hose to the car and pneumatic jack lifts the car. A minimum of two drivers are required for every race, with up to three to five drivers used in the endurance races at Daytona International Speedway, Sebring International Raceway, Watkins Glen International and Road Atlanta.

During a driver change, a crewman is allowed over the wall to assist connecting the driver’s drink tube, radio, hoses and safety belts, along with the four crewmen allowed over the wall to work on the car. In addition to refueling and tire changes, crewmen routinely perform other work on the car, especially in the longer endurance races, including changing brake pads and rotors, wing adjustments, repairing damage resulting from contact and other mechanical work to the car.

A speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour is strictly enforced for cars driving in the pit lane. Anyone caught speeding will be black flagged and must serve a drive-through penalty down pit lane.
