Risi Competizione Ferrari Team Knocked out of Competition at 24 Hours of Le Mans Nearly Five Hours into Race

The No. 82 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE-Pro was knocked out of competition at the 85th annual 24 Hours of Le Mans when the car was struck by an LMP2 class competitor on Lap 72, nearly five hours into the twice-around-the-clock endurance race. The popular privateer Ferrari team, owned by Giuseppe Risi and from Houston, Texas (USA), is an underdog against the factory-backed manufacturers in the GTE-Pro class. Having started from 11th in class and advanced to fifth place, the Risi team had nearly completed a full rotation of two stints per driver in the car when the pilot of the No. 28 LMP2 car turned into the side of Risi driver Pierre Kaffer, while attempting to pass him. The harsh move catapulted the red Ferrari 488 into the track barrier just past the first chicane on the legendary 8.469-mile/13.629-kilometer Circuit de la Sarthe. The caution was waved while Kaffer exited the car and the severely damaged Ferrari was towed off the circuit. Pierre was checked out at the track medical facility, deemed fine and released. The LMP2 car was given a 7-minute penalty for the contact.

Fifty Years after Daytona Sweep, Ferrari 488s Target GT Class Victory in 24 Hours

This year’s 24 Hours of Daytona marks fifty years since one of the race’s most famous finishes. Ferrari arrived at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona with four cars targeting the overall victory, including the two examples of the new 330 P4. After twenty-four hours, the 330 P4 of Chris Amon and Lorenzo Bandini had done just that. The image of the three red Ferraris, led by Amon and Bandini’s No. 23 Ferrari 330 P4, became one of the most famous images in the race’s history. Fifty years later, three Ferrari 488s will look to add to the company’s legacy as Ferrari celebrates its 70th anniversary.
